Short answer (I sent you a longer by email): the matroid community has
already started. We had a
[http://msor.victoria.ac.nz/Main/MatroidComputation meeting] in December,
and will have a followup meeting in June. Several people have committed
themselves to the effort.
By the way, I changed the "Component" field to combinatorics. I hope
that's ok.
