#11589: faster zero matrix creation

 Currently, we perform a matrix copy whenever we create a new zero matrix.
 This is undesirable for two reasons:

  * it is slower than creating a new matrix from scratch for some matrices
  * it eats up RAM (we create two instead of one matrix)
