Also, we should keep speed in mind. I've done some timings:
With my patch:

sage: timeit('K([])')
625 loops, best of 3: 38.7 µs per loop
}}}
With Jeroen's current patch:

sage: timeit('K([])')
625 loops, best of 3: 153 µs per loop
