 Just figured out what happens (not why nor how to fix it):

 The upstream ECL building script creates a library `liblsp.a` using the
 system's `ar` and `ranlib` tools.  Then the script '''manually''' appends
 24 bytes to the .a file.  Then `libtool` trips over these extra bytes.

 So the problem is certainly upstream.
