 Yes, that's what I meant.  I never said this code must be wrapped in
 `sig_on()`/`sig_off()`, just that you should be aware of this.  You
 thought about the possibility and decided not to add
 `sig_on()`/`sig_off()` which is a choice that can be defended.

 By the way: it's almost impossible that simply adding
 `sig_on()`/`sig_off()` would make the execution time jump from 281ns to
 3.92µs, so probably you did something wrong there.
