 Ah, you are right. And I can confirm that the patch you included
 (https://groups.google.com/d/msg/sage-release/sXdDXME5Ds4/pteQHfW2APYJ)
 allows 4.8.alpha4 to start and pass all doctests in sage/matrix on my
 Ubuntu 11.10 machine!
