 To be more precise:

  * Singular dropping / ignoring `*FLAGS` (in this case, `-flto`, or
 `LDFLAGS` ''from compiler link commands'') isn't nice, likewise ignoring
 `CXXFLAGS` in some compile commands, and should probably get fixed and
 reported upstream, but ''should '''not break''' the build'' (at least if
 only `-flto` isn't passed to the compiler).

  * The error we get with LTO (when enabled during the link phase), which
 makes the build ''fail'', is a '''GCC bug''', and should get reported GCC
 upstream.
