"`[ -e`" isn't portable. "`[ -f`" is portable.
Why do you talk about symlinks in your comment? I don't see that in your
code.
I would simply remove the whole `elif` block. `mkdir -p
"$(DESTDIR)"/sage` should fail anyway if `"$(DESTDIR)"/sage` is a non-
directory.
