Something went wrong. Namely, originally, Jean-Pierre reviewed this patch,
because it seemed independent of the other weak reference stuff. But
meanwhile it depends on the other stuff.
Should one perhaps revert the dependencies? I.e., make it so that the
patch here ''only'' depends on #11943, and then rebase #715 and #12313
relative to it?
