I think there is an option to build without xml, but I didn't try it yet.
In any case since I was not able to build 1.4 due to errors during
compilation of M2 itself, I'd like to wait till 1.5 is officially
released, hopefully with proper packages for Normaliz etc. Then we can see
how to cut down on dependencies.
