OK -- so I just removed all mention of EXEEXT from the Makefile.am's and
redid autoreconf, and in the resulting Makefiles all the targets have got
their $(EXEEXT) suffices on correctly. So provided that these Makefiles
are in the distribution it should not be necessary to do anything special.
Could you try that? There's a new eclib tarball at
http://homepages.warwick.ac.uk/staff/J.E.Cremona/ftp/
