 Our interfacing with ECL got behind the times a little (and perhaps was
 never fully with it). Google e.g.
 "Making an external signal handler play nice with embedded ECL"

 There are more places where we could use a face-lift. ECL has really
 improved its thread-ready API and we should really be using that (e.g.,
 look up return values and other things on a "ecl_process_env()" data
 structure).

 Anyway, there are some improvements we could make to handling interrupts
 and catching other stuff.
