It means, quite literally, that a system call got interrupted by a signal.
If a system call (for example some file I/O operation) gets interrupted by
a signal, then that system call might fail with "interrupted system call",
even if the signal was properly handled by the application. Note the use
of "might", there is a long discussion in the `signal(7)` man page
explaining to which calls this applies.
