First-Quarter Economic Growth 6%

StockWatch (Jakarta) - The economic growth in the first quarter of 2007 was 6%
compared to the same period of 2006 (year-on-year) or rising by 2% versus the
fourth quarter of 2006.
Chairman of the Central Statistics Board (BPS), Rusman Heriawan, said today
(15/5) in Jakarta, BPS recorded economic growth in almost all sectors, led
mainly by agricultural, electricity and clean water sectors.
Heriawan said the agricultural sector contributed 16.8% of the economic growth
due to seasonal factor and harvest season during thet period. "It's normal.
Based on the cycle, the economic growth in the first quarter is usually higher
than the fourth quarter of the previous year," he said.
He said further that long dry season usually takes place in the fourth quarter
while the harvest season normally begins in the first quarter of the following
year. The same pattern occurred this year, he said.
According to him, Indonesia's economy as measured by the gross domestic product
(GDP) against the prevailing bacis prices in the first quarter of 2007 was
IDR915.9 trillion while the GDP based on the 2000 constant prices was IDR475
trillion.
Real consumer spending during that period was down by minus 0.5% compared to
the fourth quarter of 2006, while the government expense was down by minus
31.1%, gross fixed capital was down by minus 2.5% and goods and services
exports stepped down by minus 0.1%. (Herman Susanto/bud)
