Rio Tinto makes $44b bid for Alcan

Rio Tinto Ltd has made a $US38.1 billion ($A44.2 billion) takeover bid for
Canada's Alcan Inc as it prepares to become the world's biggest aluminium
producer and take advantage of a booming world market for the metal.
The $US101 ($A117.26) per share offer from Rio Tinto was recommended by the
Alcan board and represents a 65.5 per cent premium to Alcan's record closing
price of $US61.03 ($A70.85) on May 4 ahead of the Alcoa bid.
