Indon June tin exports rise 7.3% versus May
JAKARTA: Indonesia, the world's second largest tin producer after China,
exported 10,684 tonnes of the base metal in June, 7.3% more than in May, a
trade ministry report showed, citing data from five companies. During the
first six months, exports from the South-East Asian country totalled 31,431
tonnes, based on previously reported figures. No data are available for
comparison with a year earlier. Tin exports in May were 9,961 tonnes. The
price of tin, used to make cans and for soldering, has risen to the highest
level since at least 1989 on concern that supply disruptions in Indonesia and
Bolivia may deplete inventories. Indonesia has since February allowed only
companies with licences and that have paid royalties to export the refined
metal. The companies in the survey included PT Timah, the largest producer,
and PT Koba Tin, the number two. The pair accounted for 7,041 tonnes of
last month's exports, or 65%, the report said. June's total exports were
worth US$145.2mil, it said. Indonesia could produce 90,000 tonnes of tin
this year, with about 88,560 tonnes to be exported, Simon Sembiring, the
director-general of coal and mineral resources, said May 29. Bloomberg
