Indonesia's coal, plantation companies to benefit from weak rupiah - Macquarie
JAKARTA (Thomson Financial) - The rupiah's weakness will benefit Indonesian coal and plantation companies as they generate dollar-based revenue while costs are in rupiah, Macquarie said in a note to its clients on Wednesday. The rupiah has depreciated by about 7 percent to around 9,400 against the US dollar from a high of 8,750 in March. But the weaker currency will hurt companies like PT Astra International, PT Indofood, and PT Unilever Indonesia. Macquarie said about 50-60 percent of Astra's material costs for both cars and motorcycles are in dollars while import content for Unilever is 40 percent. Astra is Indonesia's biggest automotive company while Unilever is the biggest producer of consumer good products in the country. In the case of Indofood, its noodles division would be negatively affected by higher wheat and packaging costs but the plantation division would see higher revenue, said Macquarie. Other losers from a softer rupiah are pharmaceutical and cement companies. In the case of pharmaceutical companies, import content is about 80 percent, Macquarie said.
