DJ Telkomsel Expects To Get 9 Mln New Subscribers In 2008 - CEO
JAKARTA (Dow Jones)--Cellular phone
operator PT Telkomsel expects stiffer competition to slow new
subscriber growth to nine million this year from last year's 12.2
million.
"Our new subscriber target this year is lower than
what we achieved last year due to stiffer competition," Telkomsel Chief
Executive Kiskenda Suriahardja told reporters Wednesday.
He added that 2007 revenue rose 24% on year, but he didn't provide details.
To maintain its market share in 2008, Telkomsel - Indonesia's largest
cellular phone company by subscriber numbers - plans $1.8 billion in
capital expenditure.
The money will be spent on building more
base transmission systems across Indonesia. Last year it spent $1.5
billion in capital expenditure.
Telkomsel is 65% owned by heavyweight PT Telkom and 35% by Singapore
Telecommunication.
There are currently 12 cellular operators in Indonesia, where 28% of the 235
million population owns cellphones.
Telkomsel currently has a 55% market share. Last year, its total number
of subscribers rose to 47.8 million from 35.6 million a year earlier.
