Hamzah Latief, melalui Andi Arief mengatakan tsunami mencapai Indonesia pada pukul 19.30 WIB atau 21.30 WIT. "DR Hamzah Latief : Tingginya sekitar 50 cm sd 1 m. Waktunya sampai ke Indonesia kira2 jam 19.30 atau 21.30 di Indonesia timur," tulis Andi. Andi pun menjelaskan bahwa tsunami Aceh 2004 lalu saja bisa mencapai Somalia dan Bangladesh. Gempa di Chili tahun 1960 mengakibatkan tsunami hingga Jepang yang mengakibatkan 300-an siswa SD menjadi korban saat bermain di pantai. Peringatan tsunami ini juga dikeluarkan oleh Pusat Deteksi Dini Tsunami Pasifik di Hawaii, Amerika Serikat. "Peringatan tsunami berlaku untuk Jepang, Rusia, Pulau Marcus, dan Marianas Utara. Pemantauan tsunami juga dikeluarkan untuk Guam, Taiwan, Filipina, Indonesia dan negara bagian Hawaii, AS," tulis Pusat Deteksi Dini Tsunami Pasifik Hawai seperti ditulis AAP dan dilansir dari news.com.au, Jumat (11/3/2011). In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.
