JAKARTA, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Indonesian consumers are more
optimistic on the country's economy for the next six months, but
see inflationary pressures rising, a central bank survey for
July showed on Wednesday. Bank Indonesia's consumer confidence index in July
rose 2.8
points from the previous month to 111.8 points.
July June May
Consumer confidence index 111.8 109.0 105.3
Present situation index 102.5 98.9 94.7
Expectations index 121.1 119.1 115.9
CONTEXT An index of above 100 shows optimism, while below 100
signals pessimism. The survey is based on 4,700 household in 18
cities in Southeast Asia's biggest economy. Consumers see prices rising in
the next three to six months
due to limited stocks of staple goods and worries over the
possibility of the government cutting subsidies for fuel and
electricity, the survey showed. Indonesia's annual inflation rate dropped to
4.6 percent in
July, the lowest in 14 months, but though economists expect
inflation to pick up during the Ramadan festive season in
August. Bank Indonesia sees the economy growing up to 6.8 percent
this year.
