Asian Market Summary; Yen Weakens On possibility Of Intervention Regional markets mostly lower in volatile trade amid subdued sentiment; Nikkei down 1.0%, S & P / ASX down 0.6%, which HSI lost 0.8%, Kospi index slides 2.0%, which TAIEX lost 0.4%, the Sensex is flat, the Shanghai Composite fell 0.7%, STI slide 1.3%, and the NZX-50 gains 0.2%.
In the FX market, Yen weakening against the USD and EUR as speculation mounted that the Japanese government will soon intervene the currency market after another safe-haven currency surged to a new record high Friday. USD / JPY at 76.72 from 76.54 late Friday in New York. EUR / USD is at 1.4369 from 1.4396, and EUR / JPY at 110.25 from 110.20. Thailand 2Q GDP shrinking by 0.2% from January to March quarter vs. 0.4% expected growth. Thai government's economic planning agency slightly revised down its forecast for full year growth to 3.5% -4.0% from 3.5% -4.5%. Spot gold hit a new record high of $ 1,880.20 per troy ounce, and was last at $ 1879.80 up $ 26.70 from New York Thursday. NYMEX September crude oil futures fell 72 cents to $ 81.54/bbl.
