Past results don't predict future ones, of course. But some strategists say there is a more fundamental case for an extended small-cap rally. While the profit margins at large companies have reached record levels—increasing anxiety that cost cutting won't help boost future earnings—small-company profit margins are still below their precrisis levels, according to Chip Miller, a small-cap strategist at UBS. Small caps, meanwhile, beat earnings expectations by 6.5% during the third quarter, Mr. Miller says, compared with 3.5% for large caps.
