Well at least it is better than when Carolyn called and said: "I just 
downloaded 30mb of stuff over the last 15 minutes and got this message, 
oh and the presentation is in 15 minutes".  The problem was that she had 
10 macs with 1.4 installed, and the message was some null pointer or 
something that had no meaning at all.  At least in Jim's case the error 
should have come up before webstart tried to download anything.

I'm pretty sure that if the spec is set 1.5+, windows machines will get 
a similar message to the OSX.  1.4 will give up because it can't handle 
the spec, so it won't even know that it needs to suggest upgrading to 
java 1.5.   However the most common problem case is OSX since most 
windows computers still don't have Java installed to start with, so 
people just go and get the latest.

I'll move comments on this app into the issue...
