Hi everybody,

Scott, Tony and I met last Friday to discuss what it would take to have
a WISE 3.0 grading tool (at least the first version of it) for a SAIL run in
October. Take a look at this page to see the "components", "development
plans", "scenarios", and links to existing AnnotationService design pages:
http://www.telscenter.org/confluence/display/PRP/2007-07-03+-+Teacher+annotations

We have a lot of work ahead of us to make the "release date", which we
have set for the TELS Researchers' meeting on September 25 (less than one
month!!).

First of all, most of the underlying components in the Portal world need to
be written. These are things like retrieving teachers' comments/scores,
students' work, and question prompts from appropriate places and making them
available to the jsp pages. We'll also need a way to ensure that the
comments/scores get saved and versioned.

Secondly, the "UI" for displaying students' work does not exist yet. We've
settled on the AJAX solution (the other was a Java client application) for
this upcoming release because we think it'll be faster to develop. The UI
would have to allow teachers to enter comments/scores and talk to the portal
backend to save those values. Hence, the portal must also provide a service
that the UI can communicate with (this service doesn't exist yet either).

Thirdly, in the sail-core codebase, we need to add support in current
annotation bundle format for linking annotations to individual sock entries;
right now, it only allows annotation for socks, so versioning teacher's
comments is hard (doable, but hard).

Lastly, the VLE needs to be able to "load" these comments/scores and
associate them with the correct steps when the VLE is launched. This part
has been written and tested before, but we'll have to revisit them and make
sure they work with the portal. This would imply that the portal must
provide the VLE with information on how to obtain the comments/scores (this
doesn't exist).

So that's the big picture. Here's the big breakdown of tasks: Scott
will work on the existing sail-core/VLE/SDS codebases to ensure that they're
doing what they're supposed to be doing. Tony will work on the AJAX UI that
the teachers will use. Laurel and Hiroki will work on the portal codebase
and bring the technologies together.

We hope to make the "teacher grading tool" and "student viewing teacher's
comments" functionalities available for TELS Portal's v0.9.3Beta release on
September 25 (yes, we are being ambitious). We hope to have enough testing
done before going out to the schools in October. It will be a full non-WISE
2.0 SAIL run. If needed, we'll ask you to test too.

We'll keep you updated with the progress. Next meeting time is 12pm PDT on
Friday Aug. 31, 2007. We're hoping to have some work done before then so we
can actually have something concrete to discuss.

Hiroki
