      Aum Sri Sai Ram

“Being of service to your patients is My Padnamaskar. I cannot give you
anything higher than that.” Dr. Joseph G Phanenf in the book “Inspired
Medicine” page 243. Baba said the above words to a group of doctors from abroad.

The Sri Sathya Sai Mobile Medicare Project was launched on the 20th of
April, 2007 is a shining example of the Immense Power of Bhagawan's Grace.

The project is proactive by nature with the basic aim of improving the
quality of life of the poorest of the poor through various means in an
integrated manner with prime focus on their health and physical well being. As
Bhagawan has often said “Don't wait for the opportunity to serve, go out and
grab the opportunity which is already available”

Starting initially in a very humble manner, the project has moved from
strength to strength. As of 31st December 2010, over 9,36,293 patients covering
thousands of families have been provided with free medical aid and treated for
various ailments. The mobile medical dispensaries visit over 250 centres on a
regular basis as per a fixed timetable and more centres have been identified
where regular service activities will be initiated shortly.

Keeping in mind Bhagawan's words that efforts to serve must spring from a
concern for the suffering of others and the service must be a genuine effort to
get rid of that anguish, several new initiatives are constantly being taken to
improve the range and quality of services under the project. A massive effort
is being undertaken to fight malnutrition particularly among children and women.

No words are capable of expressing our gratitude to Bhagawan for this
rare privilege He has given us of rendering selfless service to suffering
humanity and to be a part of His Divine Plan as it unfolds.

      NEED FOR THE PROJECT

Today, after 63 years of Independence of our country, it is indeed sad to
see that a vast majority of our population does not have access to even the
most basic of medical facilities and treatment.

The extremely needy and vulnerable sections of society, either due to
financial constraints, lack of information and/or non-availability of such
services are unable to secure the barest of medical care.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's Vision of “Free Education, Drinking Water
For All, and particularly the Provision of Free Medical Facilities” can only be
achieved if the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization continues to take proactive
steps by going out and reaching (touching the life of the poorest of the poor,
and the lowest of the low) the needy and sick at their doorstep.

Hospitals and clinics serve a very useful role in the provision of Health
Care, but a vast majority of illnesses can be nipped in the bud by providing
timely treatment thus preventing future complications. The provision of timely
and basic medical care can provide immense relief and thereby avoid costly and
complicated treatment in the later stages.

Further, the cost in terms of time, money and effort in setting up
clinics and hospitals are prohibitive. HENCE AN ALTERNATIVE, VIABLE AND
EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM WAS MOST URGENTLY CALLED FOR. WITH
BHAGAWAN’S GRACE THE MOBILE PROJECT WAS LAUNCHED AS A METHOD TO SOLVE THE
PROBLEM

Thus, the Project envisages the provision of free Medicines and Medical
treatment to the masses in a very professional, organized and systematic
manner. The basic Fundamental idea of this project is very similar to
Bhagawan's Water Project. That is, every citizen should have access to the
minimum of timely health care irrespective of caste, color, creed or religion.

      IMPLEMENTATION

The Project which had envisaged the acquisition of several designer
mobile clinics/dispensaries, fully furnished with state of art medical
equipment, has already in the last few years acquired 33 such vans which are
providing health care services totally free of cost across the state of
Maharashtra & Goa.

Each mobile clinic has an exclusive Colour combination with the Sai
Emblem and Message of “Brotherhood of Man” or Swami's message that “Hands that
Help Are Holier Than Lips that Pray” very prominently displayed on it.

Each such mobile clinic is manned by at least two doctors, one driver and
several assistants/volunteers.

Each mobile clinic/vehicle has been moving throughout the state of
Maharasthra & Goa on a daily basis as per a fixed time-table covering slums,
Bhajan centres, schools, old age homes, factories, orphanages, villages etc.

Mumbai city which launched the initial Pilot Project of Mobile
Dispensaries is serviced by eight such Mobile Clinics covering various areas of
the city and adjoining villages.

District Presidents along with Samithi Members and Conveners are
coordinating closely with the doctors for the provision of medical facilities
in their respective areas/localities.
The above pilot project for the city of Mumbai that was initially
launched with one Mobile Clinic has been increased to eight such vehicles in a
phased manner. It is further intended to increase at regular intervals the
number of vehicles in the city of Mumbai & Navimumbai to 16.

Similarly, in over 19 districts of Maharashtra & Goa, viz., Aurangabad,
Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Dhule, Ghadchiroli, Goa, Jalgaon, Kolhapur,
Nagpur, Nanded, Nasik, Parbhani, Pune, Solapur, Thane, Washim, & Yavtmal the
mobile project has been successfully providing quality primary and preventive
health care to the poorest of the poor at their door steps. Very shortly, the
mobile services will be extended to the districts of Beed, Chandrapur, Latur,
Sangli & Satara, Akola and Raigad.

This project is being replicated across the entire length and breadth of
Maharashtra & Goa and can also be a source of inspiration to other States who
can implement it and thereby in covering the entire country over a period of
time. Thus, Bhagawan Baba's vision of free health service to all can be
fulfilled. Bhagawan Baba has stressed time and again that water, health and
education should be available to all freely irrespective of caste, creed,
religion or financial capacity.

Furthermore the overall management of the above project is being
conducted with the efficiency of a professionally managed corporation or
organisation. The goal of the project is to achieve the efficiency and
discipline of a hospital coupled with the dedication, motivation and love of a
spiritual organization.

      Facilities to be provided

Conducting general diagnosis and prescribing suitable treatments.
Conducting blood donation camps, Mother & Child care Camps, Eye camps,
Bone Density Checkup Camps, Dental Camps.
      Diabetes Checkup etc
Selective use of body and mind medicare by Yoga Therapy, Meditational
Therapy, Homeopathy/Ayurveda treatment, i.e provision of alternative medicines
where so ever required.
Provision of Pathological tests whenever possible.
Directing advanced cases to Sathya Sai affiliated hospitals & Government
Hospitals.
Vaccination Camps jointly with other NGOs/Governmental Health Schemes
particularly in rural areas. Infectious diseases continue to be the biggest
killer, a scenario unchanged since independence.
Co-ordinating with local leaders/village panchayats etc. for a proper
health plan.
Provision of Nutrition, hygiene and safe drinking water guidance, thus
promoting a healthy life style, i.e. advising on preventive care and change of
lifestyle. Mention may be made of a recent WHO report that states that one in
every three malnourished children are from India, and about 50% of all
childhood deaths in India are attributed to malnutrition. About 10% of the 27
million infants born do not survive for more than 5 years.
To harness and channelise effectively resources of the organization to
bring about a world movement with the support of locals on the basis of local
time management scheme.

With Bhagawan’s Grace, the Sri Sathya Sai Mobile Project has received
permission to receive donations under Sec 35 AC by the Ministry of Finance –
Department of National Committee for Promotion of Social and Economic Welfare
vide Notification No. S.O. 2349(E) dated 28.9.2010.

IN CONCLUSION…OR IS IT THE BEGINNING…?

The concept of the Free Mobile Dispensaries was not a new one, but, as
envisaged above, in terms of approach, vision, scale and attitude was highly
ambitious and a proactive project.

It is acknowledged by professionals in the medical and social sectors,
that primary health services should be accorded the highest priority, if
millions of Indians are to enjoy better health. And this is possible only by
reaching out directly to the people.

Each seva centre has become the hub for several seva and spiritual
activities with the active participation of the local community.

Magnifying the pilot project across the State of Maharashtra and the
entire Country can work wonders in terms of improved quality of life and
thereby standard of living of our fellowmen. Last but not the least, the mobile
dispensaries are an effective means of spreading Bhagawan's Message and
teachings of Selfless Love and Compassion across the length and breadth of this
country.

Divine Prescription for Doctors - By Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

      1. Fill your hearts with compassion and serve the poor and needy.
Sacrifice is the hallmark of a true doctor.
      2. There is no medicine more effective than a smile.
      3. Speak kind and sweet words to the patients; for these words cure the
patients.
      4. Work happily and spread happiness to more and more patients.
      5. Doctors should administer the injection of courage and encouragement
to the patients.

considerate in dealing with the poor.
