During the ancient times, there used to be a ruler named Chakravarti
Raja. His name was Harishchandra. He was known as a very brave, magnificent
and glorious ruler. To abide by his promise, he even sold his wife and son. He
himself turned out to be a servant of a cruel person.
Even after facing all these difficulties, he never left the path of
truth. After several years, he started feeling dejected about his work and was
totally down. Later, he began going some way to seek independence from this
work and constantly used to feel tense with this feeling.
During one of the instances, when he was thinking of what to do, he saw
Gautam Rishi approaching. The king bowed to him and explained his sad story to
the Rishi. Even the rishi became upset after hearing and observing the
condition of king and told him “Hey king, during the Krishna Paksha of Bhado,
Aja Ekadashi occurs. You must keep the fast of this Ekadasi in an organized way
and perform the Jagran at night. You will be cleansed of all your sins.” After
telling this, Gautam Rishi made his way from there.
Legend of Aja Ekadashi
Aja Ekadashi Vrat reflects the spirit of Aja Ekadashi in an
enterprising manner. People are seen observing this day with a lot of respect.
Parana is given maximum importance by Hindus.
Parana means breaking the fast. Ekadashi Parana is completed post sunrise
on next day of Ekadashi fast. It is essential to do Parana confining to the
Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise. If you are unable to do
Parana within Dwadashi, then it is equal to that of an offence.
It is said that parana should not be performed during Hari Vasara. A
person should wait for Hari Vasara to get over before breaking the fast. Hari
Vasara is the initial one fourth duration of Dwadashi Tithi. The best time to
break the fast is Pratahkal. People should refrain from breaking the fast
during Madhyana. If due to some causes one is not able to break the fast during
Pratahkal then one can do it only after Madhyana but not before.
During certain times, Ekadashi fasting is kept for two consecutive days.
It is suggested that Smartha with family should keep fasting on first day only.
Another type of Ekadashi fasting, which is the second one, is meant for
Sanyasis, widows and for those who seek Moksha. If alternate Ekadashi fasting
is advised for Smartha, then it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day.
Ekadashi fasting on both days is advised in the case of ardent devotees
who expect love and affection from Lord Vishnu.
Pooja Items And Pooja Vidhi for Aja Ekadashi Vrat
Aja Ekadashi became famous when King Harishchandra kept fast and obtained
several benefits upon the advice of Gauthama Rishi.
On the day of Aja Ekadashi, the king kept fast and performed Jagran, as
suggested by Rishi. Due to the effects of this fast, all the sins of the king
were nullified. At the same time, flowers were showered from the sky. King
viewed Lord Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and Shiva, being in front of him. He saw his
dead son remain alive and his wife in beautiful clothes adorned with jewellery.
With the effect of fasting, he got back his kingdom. After death, he
reached heaven along with his family. All these events were a result of
observing the fast of Aja Ekadashi. People who observe this fast in an
organized manner and perform the Jagran at night, gets rid of his sins. And, he
gets place in heaven after death. Just learning of the story of fast gives the
result as of Ashvamedha Yagya.
Pooja Items and Pooja Vidhi for Aja Ekadashi Vrat Ekadashi that occurs
during the Bhadrapad Krishna paksha is known as Aja ekadashi. People offer
their prayers to Lord Vishnu on this ekadhashi and perform jagran. It is common
for them to observe fast on this day and it is thought that a person gets rid
of all his sinful activities by praying to Lord Vishnu on this day. You can

dashi explained by Lord Krishna in Brahmavaivarta purana. Those who
observe the fast on this day gets fame and happiness in life.
According to mythological inscriptions, the legend of great king
Harishchandra is believed to be behind this ekadashi. It is also mentioned that
the king got back all his property, wife and dead son by sacrificing food and
worshiping Lord Vishnu on this Ekadashi. Gautama Rishi suggested the king
Harishchandra to observe this ekadashi.
