THE HISTORY BEHIND SWAMI’S ROBE
February 1944

When Swami went to Bangalore in February 1944, He wore a striped shirt and
Dhoti.
One day He suddenly said, “I don’t want to wear this.” A person named
Srinivasan, bought a few pieces of Makhmal (velvet) Dhotis dyed light
lemon-yellow and had a long Jubba (lose upper garment from shoulders upto the
knees) made. Such attire was called ‘Madanapalli Jubba’ in those days.

However, Swami gave up the Jubba and Dhoti too.
Yadalam Venkataramanappa from Bukkapatnam perhaps designed Swami's first robe.
It was light grey in colour and not of full length.
The dress went through further transformation to a full sleeve, body-length
light yellow or sometimes off-white coloured, buttoned at the neck and
extending down to the heels. This was reminiscent of the Kafni (upper garment)
worn by Shirdi Sai Baba.
