Love and compassion are inherent in every person; each has to share his love
with others. —Sri Sathya Sai Baba, 5 June 1994

Introduction

Sri Sathya Sai Baba often says that man is the crown of creation. He is the
highest among living beings. Therefore he bears a great responsibility: he has
to love other living beings as if they are his kith and kin. It is fortunate he
has been blessed with five sense organs, a mind in which the power of
discrimination can develop, and a heart with which to feel love, affection, and
empathy towards his fellow beings. The eyes are important bodily organs through
which one can enjoy seeing the beauty of nature. If this organ is not
functional, then there is darkness in one’s life.

Project details

Having been born as human beings, Sri Sathya Sai Baba says it is our
responsibility to share and try to remove the sorrows of others. He also
teaches that we must experience Divinity in every individual. In order to do
this, Sri Sathya Sai Seva Samithi, Navsari, Gujarat State, started regular eye
check-up camps in the remote and tribal areas of Navsari and Dang Districts in
1996.

Initially people were afraid to come for the check up as they were thinking
that blindness was the curse of God, but by divine grace and the sincere
efforts of volunteers, as time progressed, people of this areas began taking
benefit of the eye camps.

The eye camps are organised regularly on the first Sunday of every month. The
team of doctors, technicians and volunteers go to the venue of camp; then the
patients are identified and treated for different eye diseases.

Eye surgeries

Patients advised for cataract operations and surgery are brought to Navsari
with their caregivers on an ensuing Wednesday by the organisation’s vehicle,
and the next day they are operated upon at the Shroff Eye Hospital of Navsari.
After the operation and dressings, the patients are escorted back to their
residence.

Every year, regularly in September and November, two mega-eye camps have been
arranged. With the grace of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, thousands of people have been
benefited from this noble service.

As the word is spreads about the success of this project, more and more
inquiries are coming from different areas, requesting us to organise such camps
in their villages.

Massive coverage by a non-government organisation

Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation (SSSO), being a non-government, voluntary
organisation, has covered 122 villages and organised 183 camps. More than
twenty-nine thousand (29,727) people were benefitted by receiving eye
check-ups, and nearly eight thousand (8,191) people have undergone cataract
operations in Shroff Hospital in Navsari.

Future plans and concluding remarks

By the grace and blessing of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, this project is picking up
fast. It is intended to cover many more villages in Gujarat State and bring
light to several lives.
