Avani Avittam & asking for Komanam (Loincloth)
On this auspicious day of Avani Avittam, my thoughts go back to those days,
some 70 years when we were living with our grandmother in a traditional
Agraharam in Palakkad, namely Lakshmi Narayana Puram. Those days there were no
underwear and all were using only “Koamanam” which was decently called as
“Kaupeenam”. We used to tear slightly worn out dhotis into ribbons of 4” wide
and, in suitable lengths. The poor Brahmin community people cannot afford to
cut even old dhothis which they were wearing.
The relief used to come every year on Avani Avittam. The small boys in
village would move in groups and enter every house, calling out “ AVANI AVITTAM
– KOMANAM”... In fact we were begging for Komanam, which was allowed those
days. The senior member in the house will be waiting for the boys to arrive,
and will a give ribbon, to each one. We used to collect many such Komanams
received that day, to keep it in stock for us for full one year.
Some good hearted Mama would give us one or two Anaa. A sizeable amount of 8
to 10 Anaas or even we may touch one rupees 16 anaas, figure.
We would not get any breakfast items regularly on our home. But every home
would prepare Idli and Chatney on this day as breakfast. We will be thrilled.
Another one week, we will be availing ourselves the precious Breakfast in a
nearby “Brahmanal Kapy club”. Their “Sevai” and Upma were liked by all of us.
The owner of the Kapy club Sri. Papan Mama, and his old mother will serve us
Sevai for one Anaa. Count it then, for next 10 or sixteen days, every day
breakfast in sri Papan’s Kapy club, delivious Seva Chatney or Upma chatney.
Wonderful Avani Avittam......
