Seva at Ambedkar Nagar for the Fire affected people

With Swami’s ever-flowing love and grace, a Seva was organized for the fire
affected people of Ambedkar Nagar on 8th December whereby clothes and bottled
mineral water was distributed to about 478 affected families. There were 20
volunteers for the distribution.

The beginning

On 23rd November after our nagarsankirtan was over, it occurred to one of our
enthusiastic sisters that we should go to the fire affected hutment dwellers
and perhaps do a Narayanseva on 24th ( being Sunday). We did not realise how
inaccessible fire affected area was till four of us actually reached there at
about 10:30 AM. The area is low lying ( below high tide) and hutments seem to
have been constructed on bamboos driven into marshy lands ! Help was pouring in
, food , tea etc was not an issue. We identified a couple of affected people
and we were informed that their most pressing need was drinking water, bed
sheets, saris and clothes later. We were shown a room very close which we could
use for keeping water bottles. By about 1:30 PM we reached the outskirts as far
a four wheelers could take us with 125 cartons each containing (12 x 2 l
bottles) and Glucose biscuit packets. We were helped by as many as 10 locals to
transport the consignment and distribute the same to affected people. We were
surprised at the number of locals who recognised us because of Narayan Seva
activties. We informed the locals that our team would come back the next day to
to discuss the modalities with them. The person who arranged for the water
bottles refused to accept any payment. We were unsure whether we would be able
to undertake this mammoth task. The next day we got some idea of number of
families that were affected. A meeting was held on 27 November and a tentative
strategy was worked out. Following decisions were taken

•Spread a word among devotees.

•Conduct a detailed survey of the colony going lane by lane (1st December)

•Compile the requirements and the details of the affected families and issued
tokens in advance, for distribution of the materials.

HELP POURS IN

Swami has always maintained that if your objective is sincere and for the
welfare of the society help will come even without seeking. The generous
support that dropped into our laps (850 new bed sheets) new clothes, bottled
mineral water - all from non devotees was a humbling experience.

A number of people donated new sarees, children clothes and bed sheets.

A number of Samithis all over Mumbai participated in collecting clothes sarees,
blankets, bed sheets, men’s wear, children wear etc and delivering the same at
our collection point. All of these materials were sorted and counted over a
number of days and then allocated & packed in individual carry bags, numbered
as per the token numbers, and thus were kept ready for the distribution.

Help had poured in earlier in from political groups, religious groups and we
are told that the not all the material was reaching the affected people and
there was considerable infighting.

A HUMBLING EXPERIENCE

There were no fights ( barring a bit of altercation among two fire affected
people). In the background was a Masjid ( A C sheet hall ). Every one was
welcome to witness what we were doing. There was complete transparency.

Affected people were both Hindus and Musilms. For us they were all Narayanas!
And Swami has given us an opportunity to do some seva ! There was overflowing
of love. Love All , Serve All
