Does selfless service go unnoticed by God?
On 29th July 1990 Sri. T.G. Krishna Murthy, a senior office-bearer of the Sri Sathya Sai Organisations of Tamil Nadu was driving his car very fast from Bangaluru to Puttaparthi. Of course, he had forgotten Bhagawan’s dictum, “Start early, drive slowly and reach safely!” He had started late and was in a hurry to reach his destination early. One of his friends was in the front seat and his wife was in the back seat; the luggage in the car included one box which was to be offered to Bhagawan and it was placed on top of another box. At 10:48 in the morning when he was at a distance of seven kilometers from Chikballapur, he lost control of the car which somersaulted four times and stood upside down in the middle of the road. The top of the car was completely smashed and the entire luggage, except the box that was to be offered to Baba, was thrown out. The three passengers who were under a state of shock were further surprised to discover themselves safe and sound even after the terrible accident. Fortunately, for them, there were no other vehicles moving on the road at the time of the mishap. Krishna Murthy’s wife and his friend had some minor bruises; Krishna Murthy’s right collarbone was fractured. On learning about the accident, his relatives came from Bangaluru and took them there. Three hours after the accident, Krishna Murthy sent a telegram to Swami thanking Him for saving them. Krishna Murthy went to Prashanthi Nilayam after twenty days. The first person he met there was Capt. Oberoi, the manager of the airport there. Krishna Murthy was stunned by what Oberoi told him. Oberoi had come to know of the accident at the very moment it took place! Swami had come out of the interview room of the mandir at 10:49 a.m. on 29th July and told Oberoi, “Your friend Krishna Murthy met with an accident just now near Chikballapur. His car rolled over four times on the road. I had to stop all the vehicles on both sides of the road in order to avoid collision. I also prevented his car from falling into a ditch twenty feet deep on the roadside by stopping it in the middle of the road. Dunnapothu Krishna Murthy was driving the car very fast and I had to save him!” Krishna Murthy was overwhelmed by the feeling of gratitude to Swami. When he met Bhagawan that evening, He just enquired from him, “How is your collarbone?” Krishna Murthy fell at the feet of his Saviour. Two months later when Krishna Murthy went to Brindavan, Baba asked him to speak to the gathering in the kalyana mantapam. Since the command to speak came to him very suddenly, Krishna Murthy was trying to gather his thoughts even as he stood up to speak. Swami asked him to speak about the car accident. He narrated the episode in detail and said, “But for Swami’s divine intervention, I would not be standing before you here today; He saved me, my wife and friend from sure death.” Swami interrupted him and said, “No, I did not save you!” Krishna Murthy, who was perplexed, reiterated, “Swami, I would not have been alive if You had not saved me!” “No, I did not save you. It was your karmphala - the merit of your good actions – that saved you. As a member of the organisation, you have rendered seva. Whenever the beneficiaries came and thanked you, you did not accept their gratitude. Instead, you told them to thank Lord Sai as He was responsible for all the good actions done by you. So their gratitude came to Me and got accumulated in your account of karmaphala. The results of your good actions flow back to you as My grace in times of need. Half minute before the accident took place I checked the account of your karmaphala and found that it was more than what was required. This karmaphala automatically came to your rescue by averting a major accident and saved you and your family” revealed Bhagawan and asked Krishna Murthy to continue his talk.
