PANAJI: Saligao's famed Salmona spring, once thronged by locals and even foreign tourists for its clear and salubrious waters, is now being less frequented as it is polluted. "The total coliforms and fecal coliforms are exceeding the permissible limit," a Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) official told TOI on Wednesday. The Board had conducted bacteriological analysis of the spring water and now plans to also test underground sources in the area to gauge the level of pollution . "We have to find out the source of the pollution," the official added. The villagers had fought a prolonged battle against tourism department from setting up a project in the area, fearing that it may deface the natural heritage. Similarly, they had also opposed moves by a local to raise some construction in the area. The issue also figured in the Goa Assembly on Tuesday when Saligao MLA Dilip Parulekar tabled a calling attention motion raising concern about the people's hardship because of contamination of the spring's source. "Garbage dumping may be the cause of the pollution as muck from coastal villages is heaped atop the hill," Parulekar said. Environment minister Aleixo Sequeira denied that the government has neglected the issue, stating that GSPCB has conducted tests and found presence of coliform organisms in it. He also felt that the pollution may be due to dumping of garbage on the plateau.
