This is fantastic! I was going to mention the presence of mercury in the CFLs and the fact that they need to be disposed of carefully - then noticed Kevin's link at the end of his message. Please read up on CFLs and if there is a way to have them recycled or dropped off at some location it would prevent negating their positive effects on the environment...

Good to see that these measures are being adopted. Organic waste recycling has only recently become popular here in Ontario, with each household owning a lockable 'greenbin'. However, backyard composters have been around for ages, which may be something that can be promoted as an alternative. It appears vermiculture is more popular in Goa as a method of organic waste disposal. Assuming that every household has at least five electrical light fittings, substantial savings can accrue to individuals from a switch over to energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). A CFL saves about 75 to 80% energy when compared to an incandescent bulb, but costs about ten times more. However, the Goa government provides a hug e subsidy. A 14-watt CFL that retails for Rs 130 is available at Rs 59 upon production of a ration card. Five CFLs are available per family. If all 1,200 Saligao households were to screw in at least five CFLs each, as much as 2 MW hours of energy could be saved per day, worth about Rs 1.45 lakhs per month. This is substantial savings for both the government and the consumer. Use of solar water heaters. Electric water heaters consume a lot of energy, so solar water heaters have become a popular substitute. Their use by hotels, resorts, and families are increasing in Goa. Solar water heaters with capacities to heat 100-150 liters per day costs between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000, which includes a government subsidy of Rs 2,000. GEDA estimates that solar water heaters can save as much as 2,000 KW hours of electricity per year. The investment can be recovered within five years through energy savings. A concerted effort needs to be made to popularize this technology. Recycling organic waste. If power cannot be generated from the waste dump near Saligao, then some of its organic waste can be composted. Goa generates an estimated 3,000 tons of garbage compared to 15,000 tons in Bombay. At least 40% of this garbage can be composted into manure. There is no organized garbage separation effort in Saligao, but a few individuals are composting their kitchen waste. Darryl Pereira of the Reira Group has a fairly large composting operation at his farmhouse in Saligao. He estimates that he produces about 12 tons=2 0of compost per year, which he uses to grow vegetables. Assuming each house produces 1 kg of garbage per day, and 40% of this can be composted, Saligao could generate at least 40 to 50 tons of compost per year worth between Rs 3 to 4 lakhs. -- Linux is to computing what freedom is to mankind...and then there's Microsoft Devine Computers Abreovaddo, Saligao, Bardez, Goa.
