Mervyn, I did see the program and in order to be fair to the church even I will admit that the debaters were not balanced : Stephen Fry is a formidable speaker when speaking in what is, after all, his mother tongue. He crucified the archbishop. Any organisation can be a force for good just as it can be for evil. Religious ones do not hold the monopoly for goodness or badness. However, they (all religions) are super-clever and adept at manipulating - nay, exploiting - mankind's weaknesses. And that, I believe, is fundamentally evil.
