Hi Julia, I'm have my doubts about how the media tends to treat issues.
For instance, I now see a lot of the British skepticism for things Catholic as a parallel to the Black Legend that the Dutch once created about the Spanish! As if Dutch colonialism was any less brutal! But yet we know how the story tells itself, including about the Spanish Inquisition. More about this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Legend As far as the "photographing incident" at the Saligao church goes, I was intrigued why it happened, considering that hundreds, if not thousands, of tourists, semi-professionals and devotees have photographed this same structure, without a glitch. The argument that the photograph was being taken from "outside the church" is less than honest. The issue is not "outside" or "inside". As things stand, we have no right to enter private property and demand the right to photograph it. Of course, anyone can photograph in a public place (so there would be no issue if the photograph was taken from outside the property... even if without the intention of being polite.)
