Not much on the hill opposite the Seminary, except the toxic
garbage dump,
belching away dioxin laden fumes that descend down the valley
into Saligao, the
packs of wild, well fed dogs that dine on coastal, 5-Star cuisine
and the flocks of crows and vultures waiting for the left overs
after
the dogs and cattle have finished feasting.
Remember the trip we did together photo-documenting the Salmona
Spring
and the garbage dump above it? We used your pics extensively in
our lost battle
against Arjun Harmalkar's monstrosity at the Spring.
But our children inform us that the other hills of the Saligao
amphitheatre
still have some of the fast disappearing 'kanta', 'chulna',
'assaye', 'jambuls', cashews,
mangoes, jack and other local fruit, that must have made your
childhood
such a 'shangrila' of adventure.
Things are changing on these last havens of Saligao's natural
resource. Between October last year and March this year, 8 huge
pythons fled the hills between Cantare in Arrarim and the
'tollem' in Donvaddo, to invade human settlements in the village.
In recent times there are so many snakes in people's houses and
compounds, it is not funny! Someone is definitely devastating
their habitat up there.
When you are down, maybe you can come along with us and document
one of our snake rescue calls, if you feel up to it! Cobras are
in vogue these days!
