Locals oppose Pilerne land acquisition
TNN, Oct 25, 2010, 05.49am IST

PANAJI: Goa industrial development corporation`s (GIDC) plan to
acquire 1.8 lakh sq m land on Pilerne plateau for second phase
expansion of the industrial estate has evoked stiff opposition from
villagers, alleging that it has turned out to be more of a stockyard
than a production facility.

"We have written to GIDC over a week back expressing opposition to the
plan," panchayat sources said. The villagers have raised objections to
the GIDC plans as they feel that local youth are losing out in terms
of employment. Sources added that they are not trained to take up jobs
in the units at Pilerne.

While the issue was discussed at the previous gram sabha in August,
another gram sabha at Pilerne-Marra panchayat on Sunday confirmed the
minutes of the earlier meet in August, opposing the GIDC land
acquisition plans. "Many units in the industrial estate are stocking
marbles and other materials," Peter Fernandes, a member said. The
present industrial estate covers around 3 lakh sq m, sources said.

Some migrants have also taken up residence in the area. "A major issue
is the contamination of open drinking water wells and a spring,
especially in Saipem and Saligao," a villager said.

All elected representatives of the panchayat have also supported the
resolution adopted earlier to oppose the land acquisition.

Meanwhile, the Sunday gram sabha chaired by sarpanch Suvarna Malik
could not take up the issue of laying a sewage pipeline in the village
as a technical person who was expected to explain the plan did not
turn up.
