Subject: [SALIGAONET] Recycling solutions in Saligao

Dear Friends
Since many keep on asking me about the known recycling options in saligao, I
thought I would put it together in one place.
remember - recycling works effectively when segregation is followed!

Plastics
All types of plastics are accepted at any of the scrap yards in and around
saligao. saligao itself plays host to about 5 scrapyards! please keep them in a
separate plastic bag/bin designated for this purpose at your residence, and
hand it over when full. some of the known scrapyards are in grandemorod (2),
sonarbhat-cotla (1) & nigvaddo (1)

Paper and cardboard
accepted at any of the scrap yards in and around saligao. please keep them in a
separate box /bin designated for this purpose at your residence, and hand it
over when full.

Glass - broken or intact
Accepted for recycling at the scrap yard in Grande - morod, just opposite to
the European School in the fields.

Tetra packs
Tetra packs are the juice / milk cartons that are commonly used in day to day
life. people wanting to give these for recycling are requested to remove the
plastic straws / caps that are with the packs and put them separately in your
plastic bins. The flattened tetra packs can then be dropped off, for recycling,
in a box which has been kept for this purpose at the garage of the Delaney
residence in Abreovaddo. ph: Ashley 9823118321 for details

E-Waste
Saligao plays host to Goas first and only E-waste recycling center at Group
Tenplus, Abreovaddo, Saligao. (at the back of the Delaney residence). Old and
non working electronics like stereos, computers , circuit boards are accepted
here from ALL over goa. more info, and a complete list of about 100 items of
ewaste accepted here is available at www.grouptenplus.com or phone Ashley
9823118321 for details.
P.S: it is now a law effected from 1st May 2012 that everyone has to give their
E-waste for recycling - its called the E-waste management and handling rules
2011.

Composting
Many Saligaokars have good composting pits and are involved in composting their
bio-degradable wet waste. people with at least a 2x2 meters free space in their
gardens are advised to build a composting pit, or buy a plastic ready made
container. Ready made recycled plastic composting bins are available from
www.shaktiindia.com
Information about composting solutions whatever type - EM, vermicomposting ...
can be found from people who have been activity involved in doing so like
Nicholas Sequira - (sonarbhat) ; Mario Mascarenhas - (sonarbhat) or Ambrose
vaz (dmellovaddo). recommended for generating good fertilizer and therefore
becoming less dependant on harmful chemicals

Tubelights, CFL's & Batteries
While is it E-waste, These are some of the most hazardous items known as they
are easily breakable; and practically just one company in Goa to recycle it. do
you know that there is a cost involved to recycle these 2 items? recycling
costs almost double that of a new battery!. Currently In Goa only corporates &
manufacturing units follow this recycling , BUT until the government comes out
with a solution of subsiding this recycling AND the producers make it a part of
their EPR as mandated by the e-waste management rules, people are requested to
please STORE these items and do NOT throw them out.
Tubelights - if they break or develop leaks - it could be dangerous to get in
contact with the mercury. keep it in a cardboard or corrugated box safely in a
corner of your residence where it will not break.
Batteries : - keep used battries in a glass bottle OR a hard plastic bottle
designated for this purpose only. where it can be stored and handed over to a
company for recycling in the near future.
for more information contact Goacan [email protected] or
[email protected]

I am requesting one and all to please publicise all these recycling solutions
to your friends and neighbors - word of mouth helps!. especially when it comes
to recycling of Tetra-packs and E-waste which are not commonly known or
perceived as waste.

It is also important to educate people about the difference between reusing and
recycling
eg: - we re-use a discarded water bottle as a flower pot. we give it for
recycling to be converted back into virgin plastic to be used again in the
manufacturing process.

However in all your talks and information, remember - Segregate ; segregate ;
segregate and follow the 3 R's
