The pharmacy was situated in Bobo's inn Cotula . It was called Bambolkar's
pharmacy and Ruzarin Cordeiro was the technical director (i hope I am using
correct tecknology) I cannot remember when the pharmacy was closed and bank of
India was started i think it was in 1967 and Avelino Fernandes from grande
Morod was the first bank Manager then. In 1967 I opened my first savings bank
account and it was really a sensational job to visit the bank and deposit the
money. albert

Subject: [SALIGAONET] Designer History of Saligao? Great Idea!
Date: Thu, 3 Jan 2013 10:01:56 +0000

I recall my Dad, years ago, talking about some Pharmacy in sCotula but didnt
pay heed - Dr. Avelino used to give us the prescription way back in the 1960's
& we had to go all the way to Mapusa to get the mixture made at Union
Pharmacy..... Pharmacy in Saligao must have been closed before 1967,..guess
that was it especially as the info is obtained from Fr. Nasciment. Perhaps one
should contact Mel D'Souza also as he was in Saligao quite some time & would
definitely remember & have more information.

The idea of M&M is great! Unfortunately, I wont be of any help since by now
most of you know I am not savvy enough when it comes to modern technology. But
if Rico is going to help & Ashley decides too, then I am sure everything will
be fine.

All the best to all concerned.

Dear Saligaokaram,

It is the tiny, little historical excavations like these that make for that
unique, designer history of each village.

We were talking to Rico about the possibility of getting a group of Saligaokars
who would be interested in becoming Wikipedia editors/authors for the initial
purpose of recording everything factual about Saligao there. A page has
already been started and Rico who has his own page, has been a regular author
there.

Imagine a resource where you could find "Everything you ever wanted to know
about Saligao and Saligaokars - in writing, stills, video and audio!" Imagine
an organic, living, pulsating, vibrant history of Saligao which we villagers
are creating *every day*. Why give ourselves and our village into the hands
and heads of some disinterested, sleepy academics who will get an irrelevant
doctorate, after producing dry-as-dust tomes that will only collect dust to
match, in some never-visited library, that no one knows about...?

Why not record our history as we create it daily, instead of someone else
exhuming us a 100 years hence and writing fairy tales that our grandchildren
cannot verify?

Why not create our own history that will be accessed by thousands, in our own
lifetime ;-) on one of the planet's most visited websites - 5th, only after
Google, Facebook, YouTube and Yahoo excluding a Chinese site?

But we need more Saligaokars to learn Wikipedia editing/authoring culture to
begin contributing effectively. With his experience, Rico is ever ready to
help us along.

Anyone willing to meet with Rico and Mario to start a small team of Saligao
Wikipedians?

Warm regards and solidarity.

M&M.

Following the recent death of Mrs Ruzarin Cordeiro (our condolences from
Saligao-Net), Ashley asked about whether a pharmacy existed in Saligao earlier.
Fr Nascimento phoned me this information which I'm sharing on his behalf:

Mrs Cordeiro was the chief pharmacist of the Farmacia Bambolcar, run by Ganpat
Bambolcar in the 1950s and for some time thereafter. The pharmacy was located
near the old Bank of India, somewhere near what used to be Bobo's Inn, in the
heart of the Cotula market.

As per the rules in force in those times (the Portuguese days), every pharmacy
needed a qualified pharmacist to oversee its operations. This person was
required to give instructions to the compounder about the making of medicines,
etc.

Hope this helps, FN
