Gregory, this is a hoax mail that has been going around for a long time. Whether the contentions are true or not is anybody's guess, but it's unlikely they are based on any credible scientific studies.
Johns Hopkins cancer research center has denied ever issuing such a newsletter or "update". These links clarify their stand: http://www.cancer.org/aboutus/howwehelpyou/cancer-update-from-johns-hopkins. http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/kimmel_cancer_center/news_events/featured/cancer_update_email_it_is_a_hoax.html At the above link each point of the hoax is refuted, and Johns Hopkins also requests: *"Please help curb the spread of this hoax by sending a link to this page to individuals that forward you this email" * You can read further on this subject matter at: http://www.snopes.com/medical/disease/cancerupdate.asp Indeed, as Helene rightly says, it is best to check the authenticity of medical info before forwarding such mails. Otherwise, rather than helping, we may well be doing our friends and contacts a terrible disservice, albeit in good faith.
