PANAJI: The tourism department has announced plans to make the heritage festival an annual property and expand it to include more local artists after the four-day event concluded on Sunday. "We want to present more interesting facets of Goan culture to give tourists a wholesome taste of Goa," a source said. The department has stated that the festival organized in Saligao was a success and some stakeholders from the industry have called for promotion of facets of the state's cultural diversity other than beach tourism. The festival close to a much-frequented beach belt of Calangute and Candolim attracted thousands of tourists, the department has stated. The festival showcased the state's rich and unique heritage through stall displays for things intrinsic to Goa: Goan sausages, cashew feni, bamboo craft, coconut shell craft, sea shell craft, flower craft, crochet and needle work, terracotta, hand-painted tiles, Loka Daij, heritage photo gallery, a statement issued by the department stated. The event was organized by the department in association with Goa Tourism Development Corporation. A few cultural events with dances by reputed troupes were also held. Several stalls gave the visitors a chance to peruse a variety of itmes, ranging from coins and books to eatables and ethnic textiles. Ralph D'Souza, past president of Travel & Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) and Chairman of the D'Souza Group of Hotels, said, "This initiative to promote heritage tourism in the state will benefit the local exhibitors in terms of business opportunities and exposure," he said. Monica Dias, Ex Chairperson of Khadi Village Industries Board said, "The festival helped create a lot of awareness about Goan heritage not only among tourists but also Goans."
