Thanks a lot! We need more reflections like these. Over anxious parents are responding to the pressures exerted on them by the competition-driven schools they 'choose' for their wards. The schools in turn 'choose' to be gripped by the frenzy of a profit-powered rat race. The frenzy transmits itself down the line through the staff and management to the children...who are the only ones who have no choice in suffering the 11 years of school-trauma they are subjected to! Like your article points out in the Maximum City, our capital city too has elite institutions whose primary school students regularly need to visit counsellors and psycho therapists, because of the severe pressures of competition that the school generates. Toddlers end up with headaches and other psychological symptoms the day before their competitive entrance test/ interview to race into these schools. The child and its family succumb to the sheer pressure to perform like roadside circus monkeys at the tamasha the next day. And likewise for the rest of their school lives. Beyond the need for more counsellors, one option is to consciously take our precious children off the starting blocks of the rat race! Warm regards and solidarity with all those families and schools who dare to raise whole human beings instead of performing monkeys; who strive to foster planet-saving-cooperation instead of rat-race-competition.
