Dear Saligaokaram, Today, 23rd June is International Widows' Day.
Widows from alcoholism and drug addiction... Counting quickly, we remember at least 8 around us in Tabravaddo...5 from one joint family alone! From those, one young widow committed suicide, because her alcoholic husband's family took over the violence from where he stopped. Or rather, he was stopped, because mercifully for her, the bottle claimed him faster than a life filled with family violence. The rest of Saligao has too many of this description, to count. Women forced to flee into 'widowhood' because of continued physical and sexual abuse against them. Widows whose husbands have 'died' to their marriage and have found someone 'better' or someone dragging along a heavier dowry. Widows who lost their husbands to accidents or natural causes. Senior widows who live alone because the children have also flown the nest and cannot or will not take them along to their own nests. Feeble and aged widows, forced into Homes for the Aged, because immediate or extended family find it too difficult to look after them. All these brave women of Saligao soldier on, many raising a family admirably, with not too much help from the village. Some, languish patiently, waiting for death to relieve them of a life that has long since become meaningless. Today, at least let us remember them, salute their courage and if we can find it within ourselves, reach out in some little way...to at least one of them. Warm regards and solidarity.
