Dear Saligaokaram,

...or worse, a drug pusher!

Many of our young people pushing and using drugs at the Salmona spring, at
the empty house besides Amy Sequeira's in Donvaddo and around the Club West
End area in Aquem Alto today, will be too young to remember that their
village had the dubious distinction of actually having a *Charas Building*.

In the mid-80s, Padmanath Building in Arrarim was renamed Charas Building,
because of the large haul of 'charas/ hash/ hashish' that the police
intercepted while it was being unloaded from a truck into one of the
godowns there. Only in recent times, has the new generation of bus
conductors forgotten this colourful, spaced out name.

Around the same time a well known family had to flee the village for
several years, because some members were involved in the drug trade. We
saw police and court notices stuck on their door proclaiming them
absconding offenders.

In the late 80s, a European-Indian couple who were drug peddlers, stoned
octogenarian Joe Saldanha's house in Salmona (the one bought by Aparna
Shah), because they thought that Joe was informing the police about their
'pushing' activities. Saligao Nagrik Kriti Samiti recorded on film, the
damage to the house, including the old couple holding the huge laterite
stones that were used to smash their windows and roof.

Around 15 residents of Salmona, in a show of community solidarity, marched
to the police station with Joe, his equally aged wife Helen and the stones!
Police Inspector Alan D'Sa was duly impressed by this protest and wanted
to arrest the couple immediately. But compassion prevailed as the Indian
wife was expecting her 4th baby and P I Alan was told to let them off with
a stern warning.

While there are other and perhaps better examples of Saligao's courtship
with drugs and illicit trafficking, suffice it to say that the village even
today insists on clinging on to the shadier chapters of its history.
 Pragmatically so.

Since Goa is a drug haven anyway, why should we miss out on the 'trip'?!

Our CM, MLA, Sarpanch and Panchas, not forgetting our local Police Station
can help us answer that one...

Warm regards and solidarity.

M&M.
