Dear Saligaokaram, No?! You have not heard of the public exhibiton-cum-sale by Saligao's best, unsung, contemporary artists?
Well neither did we hear of this historic event till Suhail, in typical accident-style, stumbled upon this 'Top Secret' file, while attempting to volunteer help for this evening's annual bash at the Saligao Institute. So while Saligaokars and their guests, wine, dine and shake a leg in village fellowship, there will also be an exhibition of village art. Paintings of at least one artist - Clarissa Vaz - will be on sale to raise funds for the Institute. Okay, okay, Sonarbhatt's ;-) and Saligao's most famous artist-son, Francis Newton Souza<http://www.google.com/cse?cx=002683415331144861350%3Atsq8didf9x0&q=f+n+souza&ie=UTF-8&sa=Search#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=f%20n%20souza&gsc.page=1> will not be there for obvious reasons, but he has left his legacy behind. If you or your's have works of art, photographs, sculptures, anything arty - standard, no bar - to add to the exhibition, please contact: Saligao Institute's Art Curator - Isa Vaz at 2278667 to showcase or sell your creative work this evening. Thanks to its industrious president, Ian D'Costa, who is working overtime to make the event a success, this premier social institution of the village is slowly but surely inching its way towards its former glory. Since this is not an art bazaar, only *original* work, by Saligao artists/ artisans are intended for this exhibition-cum-sale. * Eknath, in keeping with your very creative plan for a weekly, village mela - 'Produce Saligao' - can we have a stall for the art and craft work of local villagers? * The exhibits on display this evening are in supply, shorter than the demand. So if you want to own an original 'Clarrisa Vaz' without actually going to a Christies or Southeby's auction, or bidding for one online, this is your best bet: walk into the Saligao Institute this evening and walk out with an original to add that touch of contemporary class to your living room...or to your collection! Last minute efforts are also being made to get other art folk in the village to display their original work, so that we at least know that we have such hidden talent in Saligao.
