When Joshua Cordeiro started his own company ‘Resource Habitat’ on May 17,
2011, his initial start-up capital was Rs 20,000. Ask him what his turnover
today is and he answers with a mischievous smile, “Just add a few zeroes to
that number.”

Resource Habitat recruits people in the manufacturing, engineering,
hospitality and health care sector. Currently, working on two international
projects, I recruit medical and paramedical staff for rehab areas in
Nigeria and Afghanistan,” says the Cordeiro whose company also deals with
two other aspects besides recruitment – training in hard and soft skills
and outsource management for other small companies. As a trainer, he is
associated with ‘People Pro’ a company that educates, equips and evolves
professionals through a programme – ‘9 to 5 Campus to Corporate’ which as
the name suggests helps bridge the gap between the campus and corporate
sector.

As a student, Cordeiro was excellent at economics, but he excelled at other
things too. When he was 20, he was selected by Infosys as their campus
ambassador for Goa and focussed on empowering young minds and training
individuals to develop themselves. “Infosys put me in charge of colleges
across Goa. I gave presentations to hundreds of students in various
colleges across the state in 2008-09. I was the Infosys link between people
and the company,” shares Cordeiro who was selected after three rigorous
rounds of interviews before being assigned this vital responsibility.

Choosing to work with the youth, he joined the Couples for Christ India
(CFCI-Youth) full time. “My association with CFCI- Youth allowed me to
interact with more than a 1000 youth in India through holistic programmes.
Travelling across Indian states, working with youth and discovering who I
am brought about a positive transformation in me,” admits Cordeiro. A year
later he joined Fine Edge Solutions, which dealt with young minds, as a
manager and also worked as a drama instructor at the Helen O’Grady Drama
Academy in Australia which encouraged the development of self-esteem,
confidence, verbal communication skills and effective social interaction
through drama in children and teens. In between, he did a short stint as an
RJ for Radio Indigo.

Focussed on his goals, Cordeiro always knew where he was heading and
persisted until it bore fruition. Despite offers from Wipro, Infosys,
Sutherland, Goldman Sachs, which poured in, Cordeiro knew where he wanted
to be. “Not falling prey to peer pressures, one must look within, shun
outside voices and realise deep inside who one is. You are defined by you
and not others. Parents must never pressurise their children to be who they
themselves failed to be,” states Cordeiro, and his message to GenNext is
this: Ask yourself three questions – Who are you? Where are you headed? And
how do you plan on getting there? Then, focus on a clear goal, draw an
action plan, be committed and the world will be yours.
