Hello
Rico, thanks for the information....Didnt know about the Govt. of Goa scheme. Wonder if it was on during the late 60's, & then 1970's and 1980's! I doubt it! Did donate a few books to the Saligao Institute way back but dont have any stock left now. You are right Rico, there were quite a number of us who waited for Saturday - Library Day at Saligao Institute. & yeh, Fiona & I religiously pounded the roads of Arrarim every Saturday to get to the Saligao Institute so that we could choose our reading material for the week. Stood on chairs & tables etc. to get to the highest point of the cupboards. Unfortunately the quota of 2 books was insufficient ...but yeh, the Institute's Library was a boon until we exhausted it. & I then took membership of other small libraries in Panjim & Mapusa. So I will always have good thoughts & memories of the Saligao Institute since I spent my free hours there either reading; borrowing books; playing carrom, whist, housie; attending skits, a few talks, OR...... dancing, especially during the summer holidays - a jam session was held almost every Sunday, not forgetting the once upon a time famous Liberation Nite. Is the latter still on? Those were the days...... Annette From: [email protected] Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2014 16:28:34 +0530 Subject: Re: [SALIGAONET] Books for the convent... To: [email protected] Dear Brig Ian, I'm sure if a library is functional, we will get enough people to share their books... The Government of Goa has a scheme wherein it offers Rs 120,000 per year to help sustain a not-for-profit-run library. (The issue here is that the library must be 'open to the public'.) In the past, we gained really a lot from the Saligao Institute library. But in recent times, due to a whole set of complex reasons, the SI has not been as active in the past -- though your own role in reviving it as an institution needs to be acknowledged. Question: what could be done to rebuild that library? I remember Annette and others (even Fiona) going religiously each Saturday to the "club" to get their quota of two books to read. If not mistaken, the Saligaokars in Bombay had helped to build the library then. If someone gets the SI active, then surely we would have a good plank on which to stand and ask generous people to donate their already-read books. At home, we're making efforts to build and sustain a children's lending library. Very modest.
