Saligao circle to be inaugurated on May 9

Calangute: Chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar is slated to inaugurate the
newly-designed Saligao circle at the Saligao junction on Chogm road on May
9.

Work on the circle had been launched six months ago and was scheduled to be
ready last December but because of design modifications, the project was
delayed.

Tourism minister and Saligao MLA Dilip Parulekar, who initiated the
project, told TOI that the Saligao junction had become an accident-prone
spot because of the large number of vehicles using the Chogm road to reach
the beach-belt, and there was a need to regulate traffic there. The new
circle has been planned to smoothen traffic flow, he said. The perimeter of
the 11m-wide Saligao circle will have a garden and a fountain in the middle
so as to make it aesthetically pleasing. "Tourists use this road to reach
the world-famous Calangute beach, so the tourism department decided to
expand and beautify the entire road and construct a circle. The project has
been undertaken at a cost of 12crore," Parulekar said.

The project included widening of the Chogm road from O'Coqueiro junction to
Calangute church, passing through Saligao. A narrow section passing through
Sangolda has also been widened after house owners gave their consent for
the demolition of their compound walls. The footpaths at the Saligao circle
have been barricaded so that pedestrians do not walk or cross the roads
indiscriminately. There will be notified pedestrian crossings at certain
spots so that traffic flow is smooth. There are also benches along the
promenade.

Besides Parulekar, GTDC chairman Nilesh Cabral, Saligao sarpanch Eknath
Oraskar, and senior officials from the tourism department, WRD are also
expected to be present.

SALIGAO: A new-look Saligao junction has been taking shape with a
roundabout and a fountain in the middle expected to spray water into the
air sometime soon, while the Chogm road, built in the 1980s to smoothen
traffic to the Bardez coastal belt, is also getting a makeover.

The Chogm road from O'Coqueiro junction to Calangute church, passing
through Saligao, the constituency represented by tourism minister Dilip
Parulekar, has been renovated and widened with 12 crore from the tourism
department. A narrow section passing through Sangolda has also been widened
after house owners gave consent for the demolition of their compound walls.

Talking to TOI recently, Parulekar said the Saligao junction had become an
accident-prone spot because of the large number of vehicles using the Chogm
road to reach the beach-belt, and there was a need to regulate traffic
there. The new circle has been planned to smoothen the traffic flow, he
said. The perimeter of the 11m-wide Saligao circle will have a garden and a
fountain in the middle so as to make it aesthetically pleasing.

"Tourists use this road to reach the world-famous Calangute beach, so the
tourism department decided to expand and beautify the entire road and also
construct a circle. The project has been undertaken at a cost of 12 crore,"
Parulekar, the Saligao MLA, said.

Besides Chogm road, the project also includes a new footpath from Saligao
to Parra. The footpaths at the Saligao circle have been barricaded so that
pedestrians do not walk or cross the roads indiscriminately. There will be
notified pedestrian crossings at certain spots so that traffic is smooth
and there are no accidents. There are also benches for tired legs. Though
the circle and fountain were expected to be ready earlier this year, the
work is still continuing and is now expected to be ready before the monsoon.
