PANAJI: Former chief minister, Dr Wilfred de Souza passed away after a brief illness at a city hospital on Friday morning. He was 88. Wilfred, who holds a double FRCS (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, (Edinburgh and London) was conferred with several awards, plunged into politics after he contested the assembly elections in 1974. He was recipient of Dr B C Roy Award as "Eminent Medical Man & Statesman" from the Medical Council of India at the hands of then President of India, K R Narayanan. Known for his combative brand of politics, he was the key figure in the Congress (U) win in 1980, which disloged the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party after 17 years of rule and changed the face of state politics. De Souza was first sworn in chief minister in 1993. He was dislodged by a rebel group but regained his status after six days till November 1994, the twin stints lasting about 19 months. He also became chief minister in 1998 for a short term from July 30, 1998 till November 26, 1998 when a splinter group toppled his government. The veteran politician represented UGP, Congress (U) and (I), Goa Rajiv Congress, NCP and Trinamool Congress during his political career spanning over three decades. He was admitted to a city hospital affect developing some respiratory problems.
