A good write-up on Mrs. Vera Carvalho (as I knew her). She was very much involved in social issues and beautifully said – she made this a better place. She rode a moped (if I’m not mistaken).

Got to know her as a young adult, when she was our Portuguese language teacher during our short term course at the Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Alto Porvorim, sometime in the 1980s. Though I grew up in Saligao, I didn't know her earlier on. Probably, like one of the many returning villagers, she was based elsewhere before that. Later on, as a correspondent, I would often encounter her during the protest meetings over issues like tourism, environment and other citizen concerns. Though in her 70s, she was committed and concerned over such issues, and took to the picket lines to make this clear. Also we got to know her better through our activist friends, Mario and Muriel. Later on, I got to know that she had been an airhostess with the Indo-Portuguese airlines TAIP (correct me if wrong over this). That must have been in the 1950s! Her son Jorge was active in reviving the Saligao Institute, though he unfortunately died earlier. Thanks for all you did to make this a better place, Veronica.
